Ye Zi’s heart trembled heavily and he subconsciously hid the Imperial decree behind his back: “Z-Zicheng, why are you here?……”

“Is that all you have to ask?” Gu Yan curled his lips as he walked slowly toward Ye Zi.

His face was terrifyingly gloomy. This was the first time Ye Zi had seen him make this face in front of him and he stepped back in fear.

After Ye Zi took a few steps backward, his back touched the table in the inner room of the bedchamber and was effectively trapped.

Gu Yan walked up to him and grabbed his wrist. He exerted such strength that Ye Zi was in pain, allowing Gu Yan to snatch the Imperial decree from his hand.

On the bed, Emperor Jinghe was barely able to muster: “Yan’er, calm down a little……”

“Shut up!” Gu Yan rebuked without looking back, raising his eyes to look at Ye Zi.

He put the Imperial decree on the table, pulled Ye Zi to his body, and softened his voice: “A Zi, what do you want to do?”

Ye Zi trembled all over and struggled hard, trying to break free from Gu Yan’s restraints. Gu Yan twisted his hand behind his back and brought the two of them closer.

Ye Zi couldn’t break free and whispered: “Zicheng, let’s go back and talk about it, okay?”

“No.” Gu Yan looked deeply at him. The bottom of his eyes showed a bit of darkness, but his voice was gentle, “Tell me, what do you want to do?”

Ye Zi turned his head and didn’t answer.

Gu Yan’s eyes darkened. He forcefully pulled Ye Zi’s chin and kissed him hard.

The kiss was overbearing and forceful, with a hint of anger. Ye Zi was momentarily inattentive and allowed the other part to drive straight in. Gu Yan ferociously wreaked havoc in Ye Zi’s mouth, and in a short while, Ye Zi wasn’t able to catch his breath.

By the time he let go of him, Ye Zi was already red in the eyes and breathing heavily.

Gu Yan’s demeanor didn’t change. He calmly looked down at him: “Speak, what do you want to do?”

Ye Zi was muddled from his kiss and whispered quietly:  “Zicheng, let go first……”

Before he could finish his sentence, he was met with another long and overbearing kiss as his response.

A moment later, Gu Yan let go of him.

Ye Zi’s whole body felt weak now and he couldn’t stand still. He leaned weakly against the table and gasped softly.

Gu Yan looked down into those eyes and finally sighed helplessly, asking softly: “So you don’t want me anymore?”

Ye Zi’s eyes suddenly reddened: “That’s not……”

Gu Yan said: “Then tell me, what do you want to do?”

“I……” Ye Zi lowered his head and bit his lower lip, unable to say anything.

Gu Yan stared at him for a long time and suddenly laughed out softly: “Ye Zi, what do you take me for?”

He let go of his hand and picked up the Imperial decree on the table. He then turned around, walked back to the bed, and reached for the letter of peaceful separation.

Emperor Jinghe reached out and pressed his hand on the letter of peaceful separation. Gu Yan looked up at him with a hint of hostility showing in his eyes.

“Yan’er, why are you doing this?” Emperor Jinghe looked at him and said calmly, “After signing the letter of peaceful separation, he simply won’t be the main consort anymore. After you succeed the throne, you can always re-incorporate him into the harem. What difference would it make?”

“You ask me what difference it would make……” Gu Yan snorted and faintly said: “Your Holiness, since you already prepared the letter of peaceful separation, do you think I don’t know your intentions? You’ve probably already picked out an Empress candidate for me and want me to obediently branch out for the sake of the Imperial family, right?”

Emperor Jinghe stared at him closely, suddenly feeling short of breath and speechless.

He had been in surprisingly good spirits tonight, but now after listening to Gu Yan’s words, his little energy seemed to be gradually drained away. Emperor Jinghe took a breath: “Yan’er, you…….”

Gu Yan had no intention of letting him finish his sentence.

He removed Emperor Jinghe’s hand, smoothed the two Imperial decrees neatly, and placed them in his bosom. Afterward, Gu Yan stood up, straightened his lapel, and looked indifferently at Emperor Jinghe: “……This throne, I don’t want it.”

After he finished saying this, he pulled Ye Zi’s hand and headed out.

“Gu Zicheng!” Emperor Jinghe scolded and hissed, “If you don’t accept the throne, are you going to let Prince Jing invade Chang’an and bloodbath the Imperial city? Do you know how many innocent people are still in this Imperial city?!”

Gu Yan’s footsteps slightly paused, but he continued walking away without looking back.

“G-Gu……” Emperor Jinghe couldn’t catch his breath. His body shook and he spat out a mouthful of blood.

It was unknown whether the servants were ordered by Gu Yan or because they heard some noise, but a large number of people rushed into the bedchamber. In the chaos, someone helped Emperor Jinghe up.

But Emperor Jinghe seemed to have exhausted all his energy, his eyes were lax and his breath was weak.

Outside the hall, Gu Yan ordered someone to invite Pei Ge and pulled Ye Zi outside in silence.

Ye Zi hung his head low, not saying a word and not daring to say anything.

Only when they walked to a secluded place did Gu Yan stop and turn his head to look at him. Ye Zi’s lips were so brutally kissed by him that there was a thin cut on his lips and they were abnormally red.

Gu Yan reached out and gently stroked the scar, asking in a warm voice: “Does it hurt?”

Ye Zi shook his head: “It doesn’t hurt.”

Gu Yan sighed: “Now that there are no outsiders, can you tell me what you’re really thinking?”

Ye Zi pursed his lips and said in a low voice: “We still don’t know Prince Jing’s attitude so we can’t rashly let him attack Chang’an. The Fifth Imperial Prince is still too young to take on a big role, the Second Imperial Prince has been abolished, the Crown Prince has fled, and now the only one who can inherit the throne is you.”

His reasoning was clear and incomparably lucid.

Gu Yan pressed down the anger in his heart and patiently said: “Continue.”

Ye Zi didn’t dare to look at him. He lowered his head and said slowly: “The foundation of this dynasty has been destroyed, and after this war, it will be even more riddled with holes. But I think if it were up to you, it would definitely be repaired in less than ten years.”

“……The Fifth Imperial Prince Gu Xu is young, but his talent and disposition aren’t bad. If I carefully teach him for a few years, he should be able to become a great man.”

“He listens to me and I’ll teach him well. When he grows up, you can hand over the throne to him naturally and retire with success. At that time, we can…..”

Ye Zi paused and added: “Zicheng, there is no need to lose the throne for me. That’s only a title, without it, I can still stay by your side. I don’t care.”

Gu Yan looked down at him and asked softly: “Do you really not care?”

Ye Zi’s eyes trembled lightly for a moment and his throat suddenly became a little dry.

Gu Yan said: “Just now, I was deliberately angering Emperor Jinghe. Based on the current situation, if he came to beg me to inherit the throne and wanted to appoint an Empress for me, I can refuse and no one would have dared to say anything.”

“……But what about you?”

Gu Yan was angry and heartbroken, itching to teach the person a hard lesson right now. He tried his best to make his voice seem calmer, “You’ll stay in the palace without a title and power, what do you think others would say? As the days go by, what will you do if I’m really forced to take an Empress and marry other consorts?”

“A Zi, I can’t bear to wrong you like this. Let alone ten years, I can’t bear it even for a few months, or even a day or two.”

Gu Yan swept Ye Zi into his arms, like he was holding something extremely precious and fragile: “A Zi, don’t torture yourself, okay?”

Ye Zi trembled slightly and put his head in Gu Yan’s arms. After a long while, he finally responded with a trembling voice.

Gu Yan sighed helplessly. He couldn’t understand why someone he cherished so much didn’t know how to cherish himself.

In the end, when would he be able to correct this damn habit of his?

But fortunately, they still had a lot of time.

Soon, a eunuch walked quickly towards the two of them and fell to his knees: “Your Majesty.”

Gu Yan blocked Ye Zi from view and turned his head: “What is it?”

The eunuch didn’t dare to raise his head as he sputtered: “Dr. Pei has already treated His Holiness, he said that if he can’t find medicine to cure his illness, His Holiness probably…….won’t be able to last until tomorrow.”

Gu Yan pondered for a moment and responded: “Don’t leak the news for now, but…… get ready.”

“……Yes.” The eunuch kowtowed to Gu Yan and went back the way he came.

Only after the man had gone far away did Ye Zi break free from Gu Yan’s arms.

Gu Yan looked down at the man’s reddened eyes: “Alright, fix your expression. I didn’t even scold you. Besides, isn’t there something important to do?”

Ye Zi raised his eyes to look at him: “How do you know?”

Gu Yan laughed softly and pinched him on the cheek: “I also want to know why you can never hide a secret from me. Maybe it’s because I am your husband.”

In the dead of night, Chang’an City’s gate quietly opened a crack and two brown horses galloped out. The brown horses didn’t stop galloping and headed straight to the south.

Three hundred miles from Chang’an City’s gate, Prince Jing’s army was camping there.

The two brown horses had just stepped into the camp range when layers of light suddenly lit up in the darkness. Countless soldiers surged out from the darkness and surrounded the two horses and the people on the horses.

The light from the torches illuminated the faces of the two men, Ye Zi turned his head and exchanged a glance with Gu Yan before dismounting.

Originally, Gu Yi had sent a letter to Ye Zi, saying that he wanted to meet Ye Zi alone.

Attached to that letter was half of his leaf.

Who could have given him that leaf? The answer was obvious.

This only happened because Ye Zi was too gullible. Therefore, he wanted to find Emperor Jinghe and get the Imperial decree before coming to find Gu Yi, to see what he really wanted.

Unfortunately, he was caught by someone before he could complete the first step of his plan.

The soldier didn’t recognize the identity of the two and asked: “Who are you?”

Gu Yan was about to open his mouth when, behind the crowd, someone suddenly shouted: “All of you, out of the way.”

The crowd made a gap towards the sides and a general in armor walked out. Ye Zi had seen that person before, it was the attendant who followed Gu Yi around when he was in Guangling.

The man saluted the two: “My Prince has been waiting for a long time, please go ahead.”

The two were brought into the commander’s camp.

Inside the tent, Gu Yi was sitting in front of the table with two wine cups in front of him.

He raised his eyes and frowned in dissatisfaction: “This Prince clearly only invited Little Ye’er, Gu Zicheng, are you that worried about him that you have to follow him here?”

Gu Yan was also nonchalant and said lightly: “Since Imperial uncle asked my princess consort to meet him late at night, this Prince naturally has to be more careful.”

Gu Yi clicked his tongue and ordered his attendant: “Go, add another cup.”

“No need.” Gu Yan said, “There are still important matters in the city so we won’t be staying for long.”

Gu Yi was silent for a moment. He tilted his head towards the attendant beside him and ordered something. The attendant answered and got up to leave the tent.

Gu Yi said to the two of them: “Sit down first.”

Gu Yan pulled Ye Zi to sit down at the table.

Gu Yi poured a cup of wine for the cups in front of the two of them and smiled, “There’s nothing to entertain in the middle of the barracks so I hope you’ll pardon me.”

Gu Yan didn’t bother to pick it up: “Don’t beat around the bush, Imperial uncle, just say what you want.”

Gu Yi laughed lightly: “This is why I didn’t want you here, talking to you is not at all interesting.”

Gu Yan raised his eyes to look at him: “Emperor Jinghe won’t live to see tomorrow morning.”

Gu Yi’s movements lurched and Gu Yan continued: “Before I left Chang’an, I received his edict.”

The smile on Gu Yi’s face completely faded. He stroked the rim of the cup with his fingers and said with a half-smile: “I see, then I would like to congratulate Zicheng for finally getting what he wanted.”

“Imperial uncle, let’s get to the point.” Gu Yan said, “What exactly do you want before you’re willing to retreat?”

Gu Yi took a sip of wine: “I fought all the way from the fiefdom to here, if I’m just going to retreat when you say so, aren’t I losing face?”

Gu Yan took out a letter from his pocket and handed it to Gu Yi.

Gu Yi took the letter and casually scanned it, then he heard Gu Yan add: “Everything inside this letter is something I can promise to Imperial uncle. If Imperial uncle agrees, I would like to make a truce with you in the name of the new Emperor.”

Gu Yi finished reading the contents of that letter, put it aside, and said in a faint voice: “Your Majesty Prince Rui is truly sincere.”

Ye Zi frowned.

Gu Yi added: “But Prince Rui, did you forget? I am approaching the city now with tens of thousands of soldiers just waiting for my order to attack Chang’an. By then, I will be able to dominate the world and get a thousand times more than the benefits you have offered to me.”

If you aren’t reading this on acupofhalfmoon.wordpress.com, then it has been reposted without permission. Please don’t give ad revenue to them and come join us for tea. I promise we don’t bite.

Gu Yan looked like he had expected him to say this: “Is Imperial uncle that confident that you can take Chang’an?”

“Truth be told, I have already transferred all my troops back to Chang’an. The city of Chang’an is now impregnable, so if Imperial uncle wants to take Chang’an, it may not be as easy as you imagined.”

“Moreover, the garrison in the far northwest received my message as early as when Imperial uncle raised his army. Counting the days, the reinforcements should be able to reach Chang’an in the next two days.”

Gu Yan raised his eyes to look at him and said calmly: “When the time comes to attack from both front and back, does Imperial uncle think your chances of winning are better, or mine?”

Gu Yi’s brows furrowed slightly.

Gu Yan was silent for a moment and took out another thing from his bosom unhurriedly: “There is also this thing, I think Imperial uncle should be somewhat interested.”

Gu Yi didn’t even look at it this time and asked: “What is this?”

Gu Yan said: “Twenty years ago, Emperor Jinghe joined forces with Noble Consort Yu to spread the epidemic in Chang’an City with the goal of killing the former Crown Prince.”

Gu Yi closed his eyes slightly and didn’t answer for a long time.

Gu Yan said, “Imperial uncle, if you agree to withdraw your troops, I will send people to investigate this matter thoroughly, get to the bottom of it, and make it public. My father, and the people who were involved in this matter back then, I will not let them die in vain.”

Gu Yi’s eyes were slightly closed and he didn’t reply for a long time.

Right at this moment, the tent was lifted, and the sound of wheels running over the ground came from far and near.

Several people turned their heads and an old man sitting in a wheelchair was pushed slowly into the tent.

The old man had gray hair and was very thin, but he was in good spirits. The old man stopped in front of everyone, looked at Gu Yi, and said in a low voice: “Your Majesty, this old one has heard everything, just say yes.”

Gu Yi still didn’t reply, but Gu Yan said: “This should be the rumored medical genius with magical hands, right?”

The old man shook his head, “I’m an old man now, I can’t afford such praise. This old one accidentally overheard a few words outside and hoped that Prince Rui would forgive me.”

Gu Yan said: “There’s no harm. Sir, there’s no need to be like this.”

The old man paused: “Twenty years ago, this old one was gullible and did the wrong thing. But fortunately, the heavens coveted me, allowing me to keep my life. Thanks to Prince Jing’s care over the years, I have been able to live peacefully until now.”

“His Majesty has been exhausting his efforts over the years. But this old one understands in his heart that His Majesty only wants to find out the truth regarding the former Crown Prince’s death and overthrow the dimwitted ruler, as for the throne……”

The old man laughed: “Your Majesty, if you really wanted to be the Emperor, why would you have asked Prince Rui for help in the first place?”

Gu Yi took a long breath and suddenly leaned back on his chair as he glanced at the old man: “Mr. Ge, you talked too much today. This Prince has treated you nicely, how come you didn’t save some face for this Prince?”

The old man hurriedly apologized: “This commoner has made a mistake, please forgive me, Your Majesty.”

Gu Yi waved his hand: “Forget it, since everything has come to this point, let’s do it according to Prince Rui’s conditions. However, Prince Rui, please remember your promise today and don’t go back on your word. Otherwise…….”

His gaze gazed at Ye Zi for a moment and laughed, “This Prince still has something to use against you.”

When the two of them left the camp, the sky was already brightening. The sky looked like it was wrapped in a layer of light-colored silk as the cold wind whistled through the mountains and forests, like the howls of a hundred beasts.

The two of them rode back to the city in a leisurely manner and just as they entered the city gates, someone hurriedly came.

“Your Majesty, you are finally back, His Holiness……His Holiness can’t make it!”

No one knew how Emperor Jinghe had survived through this night.

Last night’s short-lived recovery of his spirit was like a flashback and from then on, it was a constant decline. Soon, he couldn’t even move his body and his sanity was sometimes lucid and sometimes chaotic.

News that Gu Yan and Ye Zi had left the Imperial city overnight was not hidden from anyone. As Emperor Jinghe was lying on his bed, listening to the whispers of the people beside him, he plunged into unprecedented despair.

Gu Yan had just refused to accept his edict and had dragged Ye Zi out of the city.

Why did he leave?

Did he defect to Prince Jing?

Not just him, everyone was worried and suspicious.

It was unknown who started it, but word spread that Gu Yan was on the verge of attacking the Imperial city with Prince Jing. The concubines and palace servants began to pack up their belongings, taking everything they could carry with them, and hurriedly fled out of the Imperial city.

Inside the Imperial city, people were running in fear and there was no order to speak of.

The door to Emperor Jinghe’s bedchamber was open and Emperor Jinghe was lying alone on an empty bed, surrounded by chaos. He was in a daze, as if the sounds of the rebels breaking through the Imperial city had already been heard in his ears.

Suddenly, the sound of shallow footsteps came from far and near.

Gu Yan stepped into the bedchamber with his men.

He had received news from the city gates and rushed all the way back to the Imperial city to stabilize the commotion before leading a group of eunuchs to Emperor Jinghe’s bedchamber.

Emperor Jinghe already had no strength to move a finger. When he felt someone approaching, he barely opened his eyes: “It’s you…….”

The palace servants kneeled inside and outside the hall. Gu Yan knelt and sat beside Emperor Jinghe, “Your Holiness, what else do you have to say?”

Emperor Jinghe’s eyes were lax. After a while, he said breathlessly: “My child…..keep this world and the rest……we’ll do according to your idea…..”

His voice was too small and beside Gu Yan, no one else could hear what Emperor Jinghe was actually saying.

Gu Yan reached out and took hold of the pale hand, saying in a warm voice: “Your Holiness, rest assured.”

As his words fell, the luster in Emperor Jinghe’s eyes completely dissipated and he exhaled his last breath.

This generation’s Emperor, after being tormented by illness for more than a month and struggling in pain and despair for a whole night, was finally relieved.

No one knew that Emperor Jinghe had left two Imperial decrees before his death, let alone that he had already prepared an Imperial decree. In the end, Gu Yan, who was the last person to see Emperor Jinghe, delivered Emperor Jinghe’s message on his behalf.

——Emperor Jinghe wanted to pass the throne to the Fifth Imperial Prince, Gu Xu.

However, because the Fifth Imperial Prince was still young and could not assume leadership, Prince Rui was appointed to temporarily take the throne and Gu Xu was granted the title of Crown Prince. When the Crown Prince was able to take charge of his own affairs, Prince Rui would pass the throne to him.

If you aren’t reading this on acupofhalfmoon.wordpress.com, then it has been reposted without permission. Please don’t give ad revenue to them and come join us for tea. I promise we don’t bite.

Gu Yan had been in charge of the dynasty for a month and had removed many ministers who had disobeyed him. Therefore, after this oral decree appeared, although some people doubted it, no one dared to refute it.

On the second day of Emperor Jinghe’s death, Prince Jing retreated and the crisis in Chang’an City was completely lifted.

Gu Yan neither accepted the Imperial decree to become Emperor according to Emperor Jinghe’s ideas nor did he directly give up the throne. Instead, he chose a compromise.

As the “Acting Emperor,” he only needed to care about how to rule the world in place of Gu Xu, and as for the matter of spreading branches and preserving the Imperial lineage, he would leave it to the Crown Prince.

Gu Yan’s plan was carried out in an orderly manner, but with the transition of the throne between the old and the new, the things to be dealt with were far from simple. Gu Yan was extremely busy every day that his feet never touched the floor and Ye Zi did his best to help him share the burden.

On this day, Ye Zi finished dealing with the affairs that Gu Yan had ordered and when he rushed back, it was already evening.

The sky was fluttering with snowflakes and before Ye Zi could walk back to the Prince’s manor, he saw from afar an attendant-like person running towards him hurriedly, “Your Highness, His Majesty, h-he…..”

Gu Yan hadn’t yet succeeded the throne so everyone still called him by his old title.

As soon as Ye Zi saw the attendant’s appearance, he thought that something had happened to Gu Yan.

Tomorrow was the succession ceremony. If something were to happen to Gu Yan, the consequences would be disastrous. Ye Zi didn’t have time to ask any more questions and pulled the man along in a hurry. But as soon as he turned around, the attendant suddenly threw a handful of white powder towards him.

Ye Zi was unprepared and inhaled it.

The powder should be specially formulated to deal with him. As soon as Ye Zi inhaled it, he quickly lost consciousness.

When Ye Zi woke up again, he was lying in a very soft place. He moved his fingers and realized that he was tied up with something like silk, unable to move, and his eyes were also covered with a piece of silk made of the same material.

What surprised Ye Zi even more was that except for the silk cloth that was tightly wrapped around him, there were no clothes on his body.

Ye Zi struggled a bit but couldn’t break free and could only wait patiently.

After a while, there was the sound of the door being pushed and the sound of light footsteps approaching from far away.

When Ye Zi heard the familiar footsteps, instead of relaxing, his tense mood became even more uneasy. His plump lips pursed uncomfortably, showing some noticeable nervousness.

There was no movement around him for a long time. Ye Zi tilted his head and tentatively called out in a low voice: “Zicheng?”

As soon as his words fell, a hand landed on his bare shoulder.

Gu Yan had just come back from outside and his fingertips were cold, which made Ye Zi flinch, but he couldn’t hide away. The hand followed his shoulder to his neck, gradually trailing upwards toward his cheek before landing on the piece of red silk that covered his eyes.

Ye Zi didn’t know whether it was excitement or nervousness, but his whole body was trembling slightly and he couldn’t help but say: “Zicheng, let me go.”

Gu Yan didn’t answer and the hand slipped down again and touched somewhere else. Ye Zi only felt that the silk cloth on his body was a little loose. Those hands deftly brushed the silk cloth on Ye Zi’s body, slowly peeling him out of the restraints like peeling off a gift.

Finally, Gu Yan uncovered the red silk on his face.

Ye Zi’s eyes were moist. He looked up at the gauze dome above his head and finally realized where he was.

In the past few days, Gu Yan had made arrangements for the succession so this should be the new Emperor’s bedchamber. According to the rules of the palace, when consorts were ready, they must be tied up with silk cloth and placed on the Emperor’s dragon bed.

Realizing this, Ye Zi’s cheeks turned red.

Ye Zi shrank back: “You, what are you going to do?”

After hearing this, Gu Yan had a smile in his eyes: “After preparing you like this, do you still not understand what I’m going to do?”

The new Emperor pressed against Ye Zi’s ear and whispered word by word: “We want you to serve Us on the bed.”

It snowed all night and the next morning, Ye Zi woke up from his soreness and was met with an unfamiliar gauze dome. He blinked in a daze and it took him a while to realize where he was now.

A hand landed on his forehead.

Gu Yan touched his hair and said in a warm voice: “You’re awake?”

Ye Zi turned his head and looked over. The latter had put on a robe with gold silk clouds and dragon patterns, which outlined his tall, slender, and majestic figure.

Gu Yan pulled him up with a smile and placed an outer robe on him: “What are you staring at, if you don’t get up, the succession will start.”

Ye Zi was stunned for a moment and then quickly realized that today was the ceremony for Gu Yan’s succession. Ye Zi stood up quickly, pulling his sore muscles between movements, and muttered: “Despite knowing that there are important things to do today, you still tormented me like that last night. Your Holiness sure is energetic.”

“Who told you to make that mistake in the first place?” Gu Yan said confidently, “I was busy with my affairs before so I didn’t have time to punish you, but I couldn’t just let you off the hook.”

Of course, he was talking about signing the letter of peaceful separation behind his back.

The new Emperor was not only energetic but also held a grudge.

Gu Yan helped Ye Zi finish dressing up and stretched out his hand to him: “Let’s go, come with me to see the new world.”

The two of them stepped out of the bedchamber.

The sun rose and shone on the snow-covered Imperial city, creating a scene of silence.
